Hi Folks,
The action yesterday was terrific. Lonnie estimated over 2,000 people
were present, just by the number of busses that brought folks. I talked
with activists from Thousand Oaks to San Diego and all in-betweens.
Codepink planned a fabulous action. The police presence was tremendous.
We stood behind barriers facing six lines several officers deep all
in riot gear. Some in the crowd said they had never seen police in riot
gear. Truthfully, the police looked more nervous than anyone in our
crowd. We walked the crosswalk, which made them even more nervous. There
were police and hotel security on the roof, and "suits" would
appear and disappear from the roof and front patio. There were police
all over the shopping center. After two hours of peaceful demonstration,
the street was closed and thousands of people crossed the barriers and
filled the street carrying signs, and banners. Twenty-five people, wearing
white hazmat suits, crossed the police line knowing they were likely
to be arrested. Jodie Evans, cofounder of codepink, was among those
arrested. I decided not to be arrested because I did want to spend my
60th birthday in jail. All in all it was wonderful to be with so many
committed activists ON THE STREET. Action is our only hope for the change
we want to see.
I have included links to some photos of the action.
